| No-no for Undy! | The big question for the Northern Trailer Travellers on Thursday night was a question all teams in the Major Men's League ask on a nightly basis: Who's pitching for them, tonight? The answer they got back? It's Nick Underhill.
Underhill was dominant, zipping through the opposition order, surrendering only 3 bases and striking out many in the dominant pitching performance of the year, so far in KMMFL play. The only guy in a blue shirt to touch home all night was umpire Kris Hartley, as one baserunner was walked and the other reached on a past-ball third strike, only to be called out for leading off of first.
If Nick becomes a fixture on the hill for the Chase boys, then they truly be a force to be reckoned with, due to the volatile nature of their line up. On the hill for Trailer, Adam Donnelly went 4 and 1/3 in the loss, striking out a couple and surrendering two home runs. "We didn't play our best tonight, for sure," says Donnelly, "but to be fair, that team can hit, and as a pitcher, there's isn't really anyone in that line-up that you can make a mistake to. They hit mistakes hard."
Chase improves their record to two and one, while the Travellers drop to .500. Next league action takes place on Tuesday, May 20th, when the Squilax Cubs visit the Travellers and Duffy's hosts the Chiefs in double-header action, down at Charles Anderson Stadium. | Travellers Beat Chiefs | | Rob Wycherley hit 2 Home Runs and Justin Smith got the win in his first appearance on the hill in more than 2 seasons, as the Travellers beat the Chiefs 8-5. Cory Warner had a dong for the Chiefs, and little brother Kris also had a good night, going 2-4 at the dish. | Duffy's Wins Again! | | Ryan Corsi won in his debut as a member of the Duffy's Pub team, as the Boys in Red beat the Squilx Cubbies 11-6. | Sox Kick-off Season in the 'Loops | It was a great exhibition of early season fastball action down at Charles Anderson Stadium this weekend, as the defending National Champions, the Vancouver Grey Sox were in town to play some local boys in a pair of double headers on Saturday and Sunday. The Sox are a squad loaded with talent, the best of the best from B.C., Western Canada and the Northwest U.S., including a few members of the Canadian National team.
The Sox kicked off their weekend by hosting a clinic for minor fastpitch players, which was attended by over 60 athletes. After that, it was game time, and for the Grey Sox it was their first game together as a team, but it was the local boys whose game looked a bit rusty, as the Fogg and Suds squad made a couple of errors, which cost them runs. The Sox, by comparison, looked at times in mid-season form, snapping off some crisp double plays and getting some timely hits off of Fogg starter Rich Haldane. When it was all said and done, the Sox ended up victorious, by a score of 6-1.
In the nightcap on Saturday, the Sox took on a team of League players, and showed everyone why they won the Canadian Championships in 2007, scoring runs in bunches and surrendering only one hit, a single for Ryan Cochran. It was an eye opening experience for everyone who played on the "league" All-Star team, but there were some positives taken out of the experience, as well. It isn't every day that you get to face Hall-of-Fame pitcher Mike "Peaches" Piechnik, and all of the KMMFL players who took part gained some valuable experience against one of the best in B.C.. When asked via e-mail about the Grey Sox performance on the weekend, coach Todd Morrison replied "I thought we played well but we, as coaches, did see some things that we need to work on so that we can try and repeat as National Champions...There were some points during the games that we had to get our guys to focus more and that is what we needed at this point of our season."
On Sunday, the Suds and Sox played a double header, with Scotty "Harv's Brother" Austin on the hill for the locals, and Nick Underhill pitching for the Grey Sox. In another tight ball game, the Sox were lead on offense by Andrew Medwedrich from Sooke, B.C. who was 3 for 3 at the dish, to a 5-2 victory over the local squad. Ryan Austin continued his solid weekend at the plate for the locals, going 4 for 4. In the back end of the Sunday twin bill, the Sox finally got to the Fogg and Suds pitching staff, with Kevin Schellenberg leading the way, going 3 for 4 with two big flies. The Sox got a solid game from Peaches, with Derek Mayson coming in to close it out in the 5th. Ryan Austin came up as Fogg and Suds last hope in the bottom of the 5th, looking to maintain his perfect weekend against Sox pitching. Mayson got the Suds Second Baseman to ground out, spoiling Harv's stellar weekend, and ending the game.
Fogg and Suds manager, Chris Cleaveley was pleased with the way his team performed. "It was a great weekend. The first two games were closer than the score indicated. In the first game, Rich Haldane pitched very well, [but] we made several errors which led to 3 unearned runs... In the third game our pitchers were tired and [the Grey Sox's] abilities showed. They hit the ball hard." Cleaveley also had praise for his all-star infielder, Harv. "The highlight of the weekend was the hitting of Ryan Austin. Unfortunately, he was the last out of the final game, but everyone in both dugouts was watching to see if the could keep his perfect weekend in tact. It was a remarkable hitting display considering the calibre of pitching."
Next up for the Grey Sox is a trip to Colorado on May 24th and 25th for the Joe Santos Memorial Tournament. Fogg and Suds are in Kelowna for the Victoria Day Long weekend, May 17th-19th, for an ISC II qualifier tournament. | Barry's Big Night | | Barry Dennis had a huge night for the Chase Prowlers last Tuesday in KMMFL action, hitting 3 home runs, including 2 grand slams in the same inning! Barry finished the game with 10 RBI as Chase dumped Duffy's 19-7. | |
